A class action lawsuit has reportedly been filed against the Californian health company known as Sutter Health after personal information relating to millions of patients went missing.

The lawsuit, which was filed in Sacramento Superior Court by representatives of some of the US citizens affected by the data breach, accuses Sutter Health of negligence in securing its computer systems. It also criticises the Northern California-based company for the way it notified victims of the incident.

The data is believed to have gone missing on 17th October 2011, when an unencrypted desktop computer was stolen from the premises.

Landlord insurance clients are often involved in property development and will be interested in a new idea aimed at helping to finance affordable homes. A charge on single house developments has been introduced by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. If you are building a single dwelling you will have to pay in to a fund that will be passed to housing associations for affordable housing projects. The new levy will be phased in over three years and it could eventually cost £25,000 on a three bedroom house.

The idea behind the levy is that developments of two or more houses already have to have an element of affordable housing and the park believes that it is fair to make developers of single unit sites contribute as well.

The scheme has already run into opposition from people who believe it will be counter-productive because it will deter developers from building new homes.

Insurers are an important part of the rebuild of Christchurch and need to communicate what they are doing so the public can understand the process, an Insurance Council of New Zealand seminar has heard.

Roger Sutton, CEO of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, which is managing the rebuild, says the community is looking for transparency and engagement.

Insurers have sent staff to public meetings in the city, and he says the opportunity for face-to-face meetings is important, as is open sharing of information between the various parties involved in the rebuild.

Mr Sutton says insurance issues include delays in assessments, changes in assessments as to whether a building should be rebuilt or repaired, and clients’ understanding about dispute resolution and other processes.
